ABOUT OUR CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE DECENT WORK FOR DOMESTIC WORKERS

In promoting decent work for Domestic Workers in Tanzania, WoteSawa addresses and mitigates poor working environment  in domestic work in order to raise employment standards and ensure a fair deal for domestic workers.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN PROMOTING WORK FOR DOMESTIC WORKERS

  • 2,853 in-service Domestic Workers capacitated on their rights and responsibilities, Life skills, Sexual Reproductive Health educational and advocacy strategies.
  • Participated in influencing Tanzania to sign the Domestic Workers Convention (C189), during its adoption in 2011.
  • Facilitated the signing of written employment contracts between Domestic Workers and their employers.
  • Trained employers of domestic workers in Mwanza on how to create safe working environment for Domestic Workers.
  • 7 Domestic Workers’ Advisory Committees (self-help groups); comprised of 98 individual members, formed in Mwanza.
  • Facilitated 6 wards in Mwanza city to formulate social regulations for protecting domestic workers.

ACTIVITIES IN PROMOTING DECENT WORK FOR DOMESTIC WORKERS

    • Informing domestic workers on their rights, responsibilities, life skills, Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), leadership and advocacy strategies.
    • Facilitating signing of employment contracts between domestic workers and their employers.
    • Providing legal assistance to domestic workers who are in conflict and contact with the law for accessing justice.
    • Providing economic empowerment to domestic workers through training them on entrepreneurship skills, establishing and strengthening self help groups.
    • Supporting former domestic workers, survivors of abuse and exploitation and victims of human trafficking with a start-up capital and linking them with existing economic opportunities; including free interest loan from Local Government Authorities.
    • Advocating for legal reforms, specifically for the ratification of the International Domestic Workers Convention  ( C189).
    • Enhancing Social Security Protection for domestic workers through domestic workers employers’ forum.
    • Linking and facilitating domestic workers with Banks for opening Bank accounts.
    • Facilitating the presences of safe spaces for Domestic Workers.
    • Facilitating formation of the association of domestic workers’ responsible employers and recognize the best responsible employer of the month.
    • Raising domestic workers’ awareness on gender equality through media; community dialogues and video sessions; national and international events.
    • Enhancing community, Local Government Authorities and Law Enforcement Agencies awareness on the rights of Domestic Workers and laws protecting them.
