ABOUT OUR CAMPAIGN TO COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING

WoteSawa combats human trafficking in Tanzania through preventive, protective and responsive interventions.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN OUR FIGHT AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING

  • 603 children have been provided with temporary shelter at WoteSawa Mwanza shelter.
  • 125 victims of trafficking, VAC, and GBV provided with temporary shelter at WoteSawa’s Kasulu safe house.
  • A total of 485 children were identified and rescued, among them 170 sheltered at WoteSawa Shelter, 165 were reintegrated back into their homes, and 150 children were enrolled back into schools and provided with scholastic support.
  • Contributed to the amendment of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act, 2008; to establish an offence of attempt to commit human trafficking.
  • Increased awareness of human trafficking issues among 5,625 stakeholders including police officers, migration officers, Local Government Leaders, religious leaders, social welfare officers, bus agents and conductors.
  • Participated in the development of the National Anti-Trafficking in Persons Plan of Action, 2021-2024.

ACTIVITIES INVOLVED IN FIGHTING AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING

    • Enhancing community, LGA and Law Enforcers awareness on human trafficking issues;
    • Identifying, rescuing, interviewing and providing temporary shelters to the VoTs.
    • Provision of legal assistance, psychosocial support and shelter/safe house services for the victims of human trafficking.
    • Provision of economic empowerment through vocational training to the victims of human trafficking.
    • Engaging parents, teachers, transportation agents, Police Officers, LGAs, Social Welfare Officers and the community at large in preventing rural-urban unplanned migration.
    • Conducting family tracing and reunifying VoTs to their respective families.
    • Provision of educational support through school enrollment/re-enrollment to the victims of human trafficking.
    • Holding media programs to sensitize the community on prevention of unplanned migration and remind them their roles in preventing factors that push and pull adolescent girls to be trafficked.
    • Designing, documenting, printing and disseminating EIC and printing materials for combating human trafficking.
    • Networking and coalition building to enhance collective voice for addressing causes and effects of Domestic Workers’ abuse and exploitation.
    • Preventing rural-urban unplanned migration through establishment of positive parenting groups and school clubs; and engaging bus agents, police officers, social welfare officers, immigration officers.
    • Conducting trainings on trafficking in persons to different stakeholders in order to combat trafficking in persons at the early stages (on transit during attempt stage).
